The AISI supports local industry in its drive to become an active and valued player in the global aerospace industry. It is funded by the dti and hosted and managed by the CSIR. A cross-cutting approach to SMME development and BBBEE transformation,
and small enterprise support, underlies the AISI programmes. The aim is to boost industrialisation of technology and
thereby improve the competitiveness of the local industry. The AISI contributes to building skills, technology and infrastructure platforms. These interventions are underpinned by facilitation of direct investment overall and in defined priority sectors. At the same time, the AISI works to increase market access opportunities for and export of South African goods and services.
The goal is to integrate the South African economy in higher value-added global market segments. This will in turn lead to the growth and development of the African continent.
The aerospace sector has a very high economic multiplier in relation to other high technology industries, with significant skills spill over into other sectors. To leverage this and give expression to the aerospace Sector Development Plan, the Department of Trade and Industry (the dti) has developed an integrated aerospace programme through two of its aerospace initiatives, the Aerospace Industry Support Initiative (AISI) and the National Aerospace Centre (NAC). The intent of the IDAP is industry transformation, job creation and industrialisation.
